Arrows of Love

Cycle of lino cuts to celebrate the release of The Arrows Of Love’s cover of ‘In the Year 2525’ by Zager & Evans.

I see this song as a cautionary tale about mankind getting overwhelmed by technology and becoming less than human in the process. I chose to articulate this with a sequence of prints created with red and grey colour blocks. First I printed in red, cutting away parts of the block after each impression until the human figure at its centre was reduced to a shell. Then I cut a new grey block incorporating technological elements and overprinted the red batch in reverse order, so the technological elements fill in the gaps.

If you look at these pictures I hope you’ll work out what I mean.

I don’t have a press, so was aligning these by hand on the kitchen table, which wasn’t easy.
